Hannah Gadsby reveals uncomfortable truth behind 'Nanette'
What Netflix audiences didn't see
CELEBRITY Hannah Gadsby
Australian actor and stand-up comedian Hannah Gadsby has reached international success with her recent Netflix special, 'Nanette.'
Her powerful performance confronts themes of sexuality, abuse, feminism, art history, and so much more, but was there a different side to the performance that Netflix audiences didn't see?
Filmed at the Sydney Opera House, Gadsby had performed 'Nanette' over 200 times on tour around the country. While streaming audiences got a view of Gadsby at her most confident, being supported by the adoring audience, she reveals that 'Nanette' was not always well received.
On an episode of 'The Project,' Gadsby said that she even "lost control" when a heckler in Perth made negative comments.
“It was not funny and I lost control of myself,” Gadsby said, according to News.com.au. “But I was, you know, really angry and, because I had just been really vulnerable, I had talked about really personal trauma and this guy goes, ‘I think you got it wrong there.’”
Gadsby continued to explain that although the hecklers were the loudest, she continued to receive overwhelming support from female audience members. “It didn’t feel good to be just yelling at this man, but I did get a lot of messages back from that show from women going, ‘I had never seen a man get put back in his place like that, thank you,’” she said.
Hannah Gadsby's highly-revered comedy special 'Nanette' is available for streaming on Netflix.
