The news of Kevin Hart hosting the 2019 Oscars delighted everyone who craved a hearty laugh, but things have taken a serious turn and the actor has just announced that he will be stepping down—just two days after getting the gig.

Hart made the mistake, in 2009 and 2010, of posting a series of homophobic tweets. Actually, the first mistake was being homophobic in the first place.

According to PageSix, the comedian deleted a number of homophobic messages after being selected to host the awards, and new organizations started noticing and reposting screenshots of the tweets, including one from 2011 that read: “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay.'”

In a video posted to Instagram, Hart reveals that the Academy gave him a choice: apologize, or they'll find someone else.

“I chose to pass on the apology," he says. "The reason why I passed is because I’ve addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it. I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were.”

Hart took particular issue with "internet trolls" digging up his past but leaving out his past apologies, and he maintained, “I’m going to be me, I’m going to stand my ground.” His caption read, "I know who I am & so do the people closest to me."

"No harm, no foul," he ended.

Following his refusal to apologize, Hart tweeted, "I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's....this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past."

For a guy who refused to apologized, he apologized again and wrote, "I'm sorry that I hurt people.. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again."

Maybe he really has grown, but it seems his chances to host any award show in the future is slim at best. Stay tuned to find out who the next host will be, and whether the internet can dig up their dark past as well...
