June 28 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, largely credited with sparking the LGBT rights movement in 1969, as well as kicking off the first official Pride parade in 1970.
What started as a protest still maintains a political tint, but it is no doubt a party as well these days. And what we’ve seen in the last few decades, in an increasingly more intense political climate, is that whether to protest, party, or both, celebrities have been showing up in growing numbers at Pride parades and marches.
Unsurprisingly, the bulk of these appearances have been at Pride parades and marches in Los Angeles and New York City, where many famous faces reside anyway. But celebs have been popping up at these parades across the world, especially in the role of celebrity ambassador.
Regulars at such events include out LGBT stars like actor Ian McKellen, but allies like singer Cyndi Lauper are no strangers to repeat Pride parade appearances either.
What’s more, a look back on the last 15 years of Pride celebrations is like looking into a celebrity time capsule of just who was popular and when.
Well that, and a whole lot of rainbow... everywhere.
