LIFESTYLE Snakes

Looks like the creators behind the famed horror film 'Snakes on a Plane' weren't just creating fiction. A new study out of Australia's University of Queensland found that snakes are slithering their way on to planes and flying to the Pacific Islands. Terrifying.

Though you probably won't find a serpent occupying a seat in business class, brown snakes have snuck their way onto military airlines to get across the world. The study was conducted due to Guam's native bird population rapidly deteriorating because of foreign snakes.

“The snake hitchhiked on troop carriers from the Australian region and has since driven multiple native bird species into extinction, with only three species now found on the island,” Associate Professor Bryan Fry from UQ’s School of Biological Sciences said, according to Mashable. He explained that the snakes "can enter the plane either by slithering up the landing gear or being transported inside of cargo that they have crawled into. Once inside they are protected from the elements."

Just for the record, Aussie brown snakes are fast-moving, aggressive and known for their bad temper, eastern brown snakes, together with other browns are responsible for more deaths every year in Australia than any other group of snakes. Not only is their venom ranked as the second most toxic of any land snake in the world (based on tests on mice), they thrive in populated areas, particularly on farms in rural areas with mice. Great.

So, next time you are worried about turbulence or flight delays, perhaps the possibility of a snake on board will become your new in-flight entertainment.
