LIFESTYLE Parenting

Raising children in 2018 often includes a lot of materialistic items. Whether it be toys, technology, or snacks, many kids are motivated by what they "must have" and many parents too easily give in to their demands.

While there is no way to transport your child back to simpler times, there are simple things parents can do to instil gratitude in the home.

A 2015 study out of the University of Illinois at Chicago found that have children keep a daily journal evoked “significant decrease in materialism, and increase in gratitude.”

Having children and young adults devote time every single day to think about the things in their lives that are not purchased will help shape a more positive outlook within them. Whether it be family, pets, friends, creativity, or their environment, have your child think about their world outside of money.

Associate professor of marketing, Lan Nguyen Chaplin, wrote in the study, "Our findings show that it is possible to reduce materialism among young consumers, as well as one of its most common negative consequences (nongenerosity) using a simple strategy — fostering gratitude for the things and people in their lives.”

As the holidays quickly approach, and children begin penning their wish lists, try having them write a gratitude list beforehand.
