MOVIES Alternate endings

The director of the famed romantic comedy 'When Harry Met Sally' has just made movie night a whole lot more interesting. In a recent interview, Rob Reiner revealed that the picture-perfect ending that audiences loved was actually an unplanned alternate—gasp!

If you need a refresher on the film, perhaps Billy Crystal's iconic speech will jog your memory. “I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts,” he told Meg Ryan on New Year's Eve. They kissed, it was magical, and of course, lived happily ever after.

Now, Reiner has revealed that the iconic ending was actually supposed to be a lot more cynical than romantic.

“I was single for 10 years and making a mess of my personal life, in and out of relationships and not being able to make anything work,” Reiner told PeopleTV. “The first draft of the script — or the draft we were going to shoot — Harry and Sally don’t get together. They meet each other years later and then walk separate ways.”

Could you imagine? Luckily, love prevailed and audiences got the happy ending to swoon over for years to come. Watch the closing scene of 'When Harry Met Sally' on YouTube below:
