CELEBRITY John Mayer
Everyone loves a good celebrity romance, and the latest talk of the town has been about John Mayer, the 41-year-old heartthrob, and Halsey, the 24-year-old 'Bad at Love' singer. After having denied the rumors of any romance for a few weeks, Mayer invited Halsey to his Instagram Live show, "Current Mood," to set the record straight.
The rumors came after Halsey had posted a video of herself attempting to write a song on the guitar, but wrote in the caption that everything "sounds like a MySpace song in 2008 or a poorly disguised Beatles rip off."
"I can be over to break your heart in 20?" Mayer commented.
Ever the indulgently self-aware entertainer, Mayer called Halsey's appearance on his show "clickbait-y," but also referred to her as "an unbelievable artist" and "a dear friend of mine."
They kicked off the show by playing the "Are They Dating" Game, in which they both wrote their answers on cue cards and nervously anticipated seeing the other's response.
"If we are dating, it’ll be great, and if we’re not, it’ll be fine!” Mayer quipped. After a drum roll, Halsey revealed her card, then Mayer. Both said "No."
"Halsey and I ask for publicity in this very difficult time."
Luckily, there was a follow-up question about why the pair wouldn't date, which Mayer answered first, using two long cue cards that read: "The fact that we’re both alpha types, while not prohibitive, would make a romantic relationship difficult, especially when compounded by the fact that we’re both highly driven and creative artists who value our independence.”
Halsey then revealed that she miraculously had the exact same answer on her cue cards as well. "For being my not-boyfriend, you really do know me so well,” she laughed.
While some people were surely hoping for a heated romance filled with fresh breakup and makeup songs, the artists' creative response to the rumors couldn't have been better.
