The Super Bowl Halftime Show has long been a mark of success for artists, as one of the most-watched television events in the world with a roster of legendary musicians to its name. Now, however, it seems the NFL is having a difficult time securing performers just on the basis of its name, and perhaps even because of it.

The league has just announced that Travis Scott and Big Boi, the Atlanta-based rapper from OutKast, will join headliner Maroon 5 at this year's show, but the 'Sicko Mode' rapper in particular has faced a lot of criticism for his participation due to the NFL's treatment of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who made waves when he took a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. Though it seems Scott betrayed the NFL boycott, he only took the gig on one condition.

In order to move forward with the event, the rapper required the NFL to make a joint donation of a cool $500,000 to an organization fighting for social justice.

In addition to anti-poverty and environmental initiatives, the organization, Dream Corps, founded by Van Jones in 2014, works to "amplify the voices of those left behind in the current system." It's a bold message made loud and clear to the league signalling the need for change.

“I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in," Scott said in a statement. "I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change."

There were many artists before him, including Rihanna, Cardi B, and Jay-Z, who have reportedly declined to perform at the Super Bowl in support of Kaepernick. Jay-Z even raps on the Carters' song 'Apes**t': "I said no to the Superbowl, you need me, I don't need you / Every night we in the end zone, tell the NFL we in stadiums too."

Some people are still critical of Scott's involvement, with one Twitter user congratulating him on his PR move.

There is even an online petition urging Maroon 5 to withdraw from the gig, according to Page Six

Even if the donation wasn't part of Scott's plan all along, the compromises this year's Super Bowl Halftime Show is facing will surely make the NFL think twice about how it treats its players.
