He’s the 45th president of the United States, and he’s turning 73 on June 14. Donald Trump is, today, a name known across the world, just as he would have it.
A well-known public figure in New York City since the ‘70s, these days Trump is one of the world’s most famous (or infamous, depending on how you look at things) faces. But was it a case of rising to fame overnight? Not exactly.
A New Yorker, he took over his father’s real estate company in 1971, expanding it into Manhattan. When you’re talking skyscrapers in the Big Apple, local notoriety soon follows.
When he co-authored ‘Trump: The Art of the Deal’ in 1987, even people outside New York had to take notice. He followed that up by taking ownership of the Miss Universe and Miss USA beauty pageants in 1996, which he held until 2015.
But you’re not a real star in America until you’re a TV star. More precisely in Trump’s case, until you’re a reality TV star. Enter ‘The Apprentice.’
Having hosted and produced the hit show from 2003 to 2015, he became an unquestionable household name in the United States. When you consider that Trump had White House aspirations as early as the 2000 presidential election, you have to wonder if he was playing the long game.
Without doubt, ‘The Apprentice’ added to his celebrity, but, perhaps more importantly, it also cemented his status as a savvy businessman and boardroom leader. When he finally made a serious go for the presidency in 2016, many pundits laughed him off, but clearly a large portion of the electorate felt differently.
Trump’s recent political success, however, does not change the fact that he’s made a lot of gaffes before and since landing the top job at the White House.
