CELEBRITY Gender pay gap

The discussion about equal pay for men and women has been increasingly in the headlines, and the US Women’s National Soccer Team’s triumphant win at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup has added new fuel to the fire.

After taking home their fourth consecutive trophy, the team's fans in the stadium started a thunderous chant of "Equal pay! Equal pay!" All 28 players famously sued US Soccer for equal pay to their male counterparts, and now that they’ve (once again) proved their value, the issue of equal pay is not one that can be ignored.

Numbers surfaced all over Twitter, with claims that the women are paid just 38% of what the men’s team makes, and that they’ll get US$250,000 each for their win instead of the US$1.1 million that the members of the men’s team would make. This is despite the fact that the women’s team has repeatedly outperformed the men’s team in World Cup and Olympic wins. As Elizabeth Warren tweeted,  “They bring home the ratings, the revenue, and the wins. But even if they didn’t, the players of the @USWNT deserve equal pay.”

Celebrities like Kerry Washington joined the chant online, as she tweeted, “Pay them!” Other actresses, including Jessica Chastain, Michelle Monaghan, and Jaime Lee Curtis, have also spoken out, likely because Hollywood is fighting its own battle with wage inequality.
