HEALTH Sex appeal

Sometimes it is possible to have too much of a good thing. There are many reasons to have lots of sex in a short space of time. A new relationship, a honeymoon, or you finally see your partner after a long absence, there a myriad of reasons why we might be getting jiggy multiple times a day.

While normally sex takes us to a happy place, sex marathons also have a dark side: the dreaded urinary tract infection.

UTIs are the scourge of being a woman and can cause untold unhappiness.

The urethra is situated close to the vagina. During sex, vaginal bacteria can easily be transported to the urethra and reach your bladder. When having lots of sex the risks increase.

To prevent a urinary tract infection professor Mary Jane Minkin of Yale School of Medicine suggests the use of lubricant and to urinate before and after intercourse to minimise pesky travelling bacteria.

Another way to prevent infections is to drink cranberry juice. Cranberry keeps the bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder.

If you suffer from cystitis several times a year, consult your doctor to reveal the cause of the inflammation.
