You may want to think twice about popping that dropped piece of candy or cracker back into your mouth once it accidentally hits the floor.
Studies carried out by food scientists discovered that some bacteria begins to transfer onto dropped food the moment it touches the floor, disproving the famous 5-second rule or other variations of it.
The experiment carried out by PhDs Brian Sheldon and Paul Dawson was conducted by contaminating various surfaces (tile, carpet, and wood) with salmonella and then dropping bologna and bread onto them. Bacteria transferred onto bologna after five seconds—hence the five-second rule. Nevertheless, some bacteria is transferred instantaneously so it is still a huge risk to eat food you've accidentally dropped onto the floor. Especially if you are not actually sure how dirty a surface is.
So if you don't want to take the chance and get sick, it is best to just trash the piece of food.
