MOVIES Aladdin

Disney has been churning out remakes and reboots like it's nobody's business, and 2019 will see some incredible live-action takes on animated classics, including beloved 'Aladdin.'

Entertainment Weekly just released a first look at the cast in their costumes, featuruing Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Will Smith as the iconic Genie. Genie is already a huge role to fill, as Robin Williams' voice-over alone was an integral part of the 1992 film, but in this live-action version Smith appears in the flesh, with some strange hair choices. But, most importantly, he's not blue. Really?!

The images were quite jarring to fans of the original film, and they lashed out at Genie's new appearance. Smith posted a cover photo on Instagram and raved about his "top knot ponytail vibes," but he also addressed the upset over his colour. "Yes, I'm gonna be blue! This is how the Genie is in Human / Disguise Form. My character will be CGI most of the movie [sic]."

It seems everyone will just have to wait and see how that will turn out, especially since the teaser trailer released earlier in 2018 gave away next to nothing about the film.

There are, however, impatient fans who couldn't wait to let Disney do their magic and tried their hand at turning Smith blue to see if he would look any better.

Most people are probably hoping the film does a more impressive job. Directed by Guy Ritchie, 'Aladdin' is set for release on May 24, 2019.
