Family-focused policies

UNICEF released a new report in which they compare family-friendly policies in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Union (EU). The organization says that family-friendly policies are important to help children have a better start in life, and to help mothers and fathers find and keep a work-life balance. The analysis for the ranking was based on the comparison of four types of family-focused policies in a total of 41 developed and wealthy countries of the EU and a portion of the OECD. The four types of family-focused policies included the amount of paid leave available to both mothers and fathers, the percentage of children below three in childcare centers, and the percentage of children between the age of three and the age of compulsory schooling attending preschool or childcare centers.

Nordic countries

The report— produced by UNICEF's Office of Research— is part of UNICEF’s early childhood development policy and programmatic work, and shows that even rich countries fail to give adequate parental paid leave, breastfeeding support, and quality and affordable childcare. The Nordic countries rank high when considering all categories, while countries like Greece, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom rank as some of the lowest.

Click through to have a look at the 30 wealthy countries that offer the strongest overall family-friendly policies, according to the UNICEF.
